Witold Lutoslawski (1913-94) was the most significant Polish composer since Chopin. His early works were inspired by folk music, but after World War II, he began developing a modern, individual style characterized by aleatory techniques. He garnered fame not only for his substantial works, but also for his artistic integrity in the face of a repressive Soviet regime.

Lutoslawski's ''Subito'' (1992) for violin and piano was his final completed work for the instrument, written for Joseph Gingold and the Indianapolis International Violin Competition. It is a four-minute tour-de-force of energetic, dazzling, virtuosity, with strong contrasts, potent drama, and pointillistic angularity redolent of Bartok. Master level, Grade 6.
