Title: Customer Service and Administrative Assistant
Department: CHV Office
Reports to: CHV Customer Service and Administrative Supervisor
Starting Salary: $20/hr
The Administrative Assistant performs a variety of administrative and clerical tasks. Duties of the Administrative Assistant include providing support to the supervisor and employees, assisting with daily office needs, and managing our company’s general administrative activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Greets customers and visitors to the Newton Upper Falls storefront, providing a friendly and helpful first point of contact for the company
- Directs customers to appropriate departments within the Newton Upper Falls storefront and Carriage House Violins; acts as a liaison between customers and all departments of Johnson String Instrument
- Processes retail transactions through the use of a POS system using software specially developed for Johnson String Instrument
- Act as the point of contact for internal and external clients
- Answering and directing phone calls
- Organizes and prioritizes large volumes of information and calls
- Order office supplies and research new deals and suppliers
- Uses and maintains cash register that is counted at the end of each business day
- Maintains customer database using software specially developed for Johnson String Instrument
- Other duties assigned by the manager
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficiency in violin, viola, cello, and/or double bass
- Outstanding customer service skills; minimum 6-12 months of customer service experience preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to multitask efficiently in a quick-paced environment
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and time management
- Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Physical Job Requirements:
- This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required
- May require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary
- Must be able to sit at a desk for extended periods of time; must be able to navigate throughout all areas of the office
- Must be able to have full use of wrists, hands, and fingers for extensive computer work and writing messages or notes as needed
- The person in this position frequently communicates with team members and customers. Must have the ability to communicate accurately and clearly both orally and in writing
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Instrument Maintenance
Based at: Rental Workshop, Waltham
Starting Pay: $19/hr
Job Description:
The Instrument Maintenance employee cleans and performs basic repairs on stringed instruments including violins, violas, cellos, and/or basses at Johnson String Instrument, according to safety guidelines and shop efficiency standards to support the achievement of the business goals and objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clean, polish, and perform maintenance and basic repairs on rental instruments as directed
- Inspect instruments for problems, replace or repair parts
- Operate and Maintain tools and equipment used to perform work
- Adhere to workshop standards for quality and productivity
- Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas
- Other duties or projects assigned by the manager
Skills and Qualifications:
- Excellent attention to detail
- Experience in art or other crafts or trades involving hands-on fine detail orientation is preferred
- Good interpersonal/communication skills
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and switch gears quickly in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to focus amidst a busy shop
- Ability to work both individually/unsupervised and as part of a team

Johnson String Instrument is a large family-owned music instrument retailer that provides high-quality musical instruments and accessories to talented musicians of all levels.
Key Responsibilities:
The office associate is responsible for providing the highest level of customer service to ensure the customer has the best experience possible. As the first point of contact, the office associate will answer customer inquiries and follow-up on action items with other departments to see tasks through to completion.
In addition, the office associate is responsible to perform a variety of administrative duties including, but not limited to:
- Registration for rental instruments, including phone interaction with students, teachers, and parents of rental participants.
- Take product orders, including strings, sheet music, cases, and accessories.
- Answer telephone calls, webchats, and emails- screening and routing to appropriate staff as necessary.
- Various clerical duties such as filing, mailing, organizing, and processing returned items.
- Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and ongoing training regarding products and policies.
- Assist with special projects and perform other related duties as directed or required
Qualifications:
- Stringed instrument and/or classical music background strongly preferred
- Music degree preferred
- Effective verbal and written communication
- Able to multitask on time-sensitive projects
- Attention to detail, especially through documentation
- Thrive in a fast-paced, flexible work environment
- Sense of humor strongly encouraged
- Basic computer skills required
- Saturdays are required

- Inspect and play check rental cellos for structural integrity and sound quality
- Make minor adjustments to instruments as they are checked
- Re-route instruments back to cleaners or luthiers as needed, for further adjustment
- Communicate any issues regarding cleaners’ performance to the manager
- Train new cleaners to clean instruments
- Manage and assess monthly needs for the workshop’s supply of strings, tailpieces, and chinrests
- Select instruments and prepare paperwork for shipping or delivery
- Clean instruments, as needed
- Adhere to workshop standards for quality and productivity
- Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas
- Various administrative and organizational projects/tasks as needed
- Other duties assigned by the manager

Job Description:
We are currently looking for a full time luthier to assist with the maintenance of our rental instrument inventory. This includes set up and repair of all rental violins, violas and cellos.
Qualifications:
Repair, set-up or making experience with bowed string instruments strongly preferred; other job experience requiring woodworking skills or fine detail orientation may be considered. Quick and accurate work is expected, as we are a high-volume shop with high standards. Tremendous attention to detail and ability to focus amidst a busy shop are essential!

Key Responsibilities:

- Merchandising, creating product displays, and overall maintenance of the storefront

As a Shipper in our climate-controlled Waltham, MA fulfillment center and warehouse, you will join our fantastic team to provide high-level service to our clients nation-wide.
Main Responsibilities:
- Carefully pack violins, violas, and cellos (including rental instruments and high-end sales instruments)
- Pick, verify and pack accessories, sheet music, and other related equipment
- Process outgoing shipments for UPS and USPS using company software
- Monitor 3rd party web order fulfillment
- Assist in maintaining and organizing shipping/receiving department and warehouse
Required Qualifications:
- Exceptional eye for detail and strong communication skills
- Solid computer skills with ability to learn new software
- Adaptable and able to work well in a fast-paced environment
- Able to work with others on a team
- Self-motivated with a drive to stay productive
- Able to lift up to 75 lbs. and stand for extended lengths of time

Schedule:
