String Quintet No. 1 in F Major, Op.88 for two violins, two violas, and cello by Johannes Brahms Parts only. Urtext edition by Kathrin Kirsch. Published by Henle Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a significant German composer whose music is often considered to represent the apex of 19th century romanticism. He aligned himself with baroque and classical traditions with his structural coherence and contrapuntal mastery, yet he was also considered a progressive in his freer treatment of dissonance, rhythm, and motivic development. His music is known for its meticulous, intelligent craft, as well as its uniquely introspective and tender emotional core. Brahms's first attempt at writing a string quintet resulted in his Piano Quintet (1865); it wasn't until 1882 that he tried again. The work was his String Quintet No. 1 in F Major, Op.88, written in the Mozartean configuration with two violas (as opposed to two cellos). It is tightly crafted, often combining forms into complex configurationsâfor instance, the finale combines sonata form with a fugue, and the central movement combines a slow movement with a scherzo while using baroque forms inspired by the gavotte and sarabande. The workâs intellectual prowess is matched by a sense of warm lyricism and pastoral beauty; perhaps this is why Brahms considered it one of his finest works. This premium Henle urtext edition contains historical and critical commentary. Parts only. Advanced level, Grade 5.
