Sonata for violin solo (Merveille de Paganini), M.S.6 by Niccolo Paganini

Published by Ricordi

Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840) was the most celebrated virtuoso of the violin of the nineteenth century, if not the entirety of classical music. His works represent a great leap forward for violin technique, showing with glittering pyrotechnics the wide range of capability of the instrument and the modern violinist. He kept his secrets closely guarded and engaged in friendly rivalries with other virtuosos of his time, like Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst.

Paganini's Sonata for violin solo (Merveille de Paganini), M.S. 6 is an early (1805-09) piece that was published many times in the nineteenth century, named alternately ''Duo per un violino solo'', ''Duo Merveille'', ''Meravigilia di Paganini'', and more. The curious inclusion of ''Duo'' in the titles of a solo violin piece refers to the two-staff systems in the music representing different types of sound, one with arco and one with pizzicato, thus creating the illusion of a duo. For advanced players. Critical Edition edited by Italo Vescovo.
