Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op.94a for violin and piano by Sergei Prokofiev
Urtext edition by Viktoria Zora. Markings by Augustin Hadelich. Published by Henle
Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was a significant composer of the 20th century and one of Russia's most important composers. His music is instantly recognizable by its offbeat, song-like lyricism, distinct, often crunchy harmonies, and sharp, driving energy. His early work abroad gave him a reputation as a modernist enfant terrible; later, after returning to Russia, his style took on satirical and ironic elements, as well as more outwardly melodic textures. He is best known for his operas, symphonies, and concertos, though his chamber and solo music is also standard fare for string players.
Prokofiev wrote his Flute Sonata in D Major, Op.94 in 1942 while in wartime exile in the Ural Mountains. A year later, with the assistance of David Oistrakh, he arranged it for violin and piano as his Violin Sonata No. 2, Op.94a. It is a virtuosic showstopper of a work, yet overtly lyrical and elegant. It has since become a repertory standard. This Henle urtext edition contains critical and historical commentary and marked and unmarked parts. Master level, Grade 6.
