Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a significant German composer whose music is often considered to represent the apex of 19th century romanticism. He aligned himself with baroque and classical traditions with his structural coherence and contrapuntal mastery, yet he was also considered a progressive in his freer treatment of dissonance, rhythm, and motivic development. His music is known for its meticulous, intelligent craft, as well as its uniquely introspective and tender emotional core.

Brahms's Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, Op. 8, written in 1854, was his very first foray into chamber music, full of scrappy, youthful ambition and vigor on a grand scale. Echoes and quotations of Mendelssohn, Schubert, Beethoven, and Schumann abound—yet the young composer’s voice comes thru strong. Much later in life, Brahms reworked it—not a simple revision, but an attempt to smooth and improve the rougher edges of his youthful work from the vantage point of artistic maturity, leaving much of the work intact but necessitating new themes and development sections in places. It is this refined 1891 version that is most often played today, and which is presented here. Includes parts and piano score. Early advanced level, Grade 4.
