Overture on Hebrew Themes, Op.34 for clarinet, piano, and string quartet (parts) by Sergei Prokofiev
Parts only. Urtext edition by Fabian Czolbe. Published by Henle
Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was a significant composer of the 20th century and one of Russia's most important composers. His music is instantly recognizable by its offbeat, song-like lyricism, distinct, often crunchy harmonies, and sharp, driving energy. His early work abroad gave him a reputation as a modernist enfant terrible; later, after returning to Russia, his style took on satirical and ironic elements, as well as more outwardly melodic textures. He is best known for his operas, symphonies, and concertos, though his chamber and solo music is also standard fare for string players.
In 1919, during his time in New York, Prokofiev was approached by the Zimro Ensemble led by clarinetist Simeon Bellison, who gave him Jewish folksongs to set in a composition for them. This became his Overture on Hebrew Themes, Op.34 for clarinet, piano, and string quartet, a charming, lively work with inflections of klezmer music. Though Prokofiev did not view the work highly, thinking it too conventional, it has remained popular in his later arrangement for chamber orchestra. This Henle urtext edition restores its piquant original form, including critical and historical commentary. Advanced level, Grade 5.
