Suite in the Old Style for violin and harpsichord or piano by Alfred Schnittke
Published by Sikorski
Alfred Schnittke (1934-98) was known for his highly individual, eclectic music, music viewed with suspicion by the Soviet authorities in his native Russia. He found expression in blending together music of many different styles, writing "The goal of my life is to unify serious and light music, even if I break my neck in doing so."
While much of his large-scale concert music skews to the serious side, he found in film music a medium in which he could more readily play in archaic light forms. His "Suite in the Old Style" is adapted from some of these film scores; it is in essence a delightful collage of short pieces inspired by baroque and classical styles.
