Frequently asked questions
Do the gold, silver, or ruthenian WMutes provide the same amount of muting?
Yes, they sound equal. But you may hear a different (improved) sound on the gold plated models if you've got a very good ear.
Can WMutes fall off the bridge or the string?
If the mute is placed correctly, WMutes will never jump away from the bridge or string. They are padded with cork or velvet to effectively grip the bridge without leaving marks or stains.
Can I place the WMute on different parts of the bridge?
WMutes are designed to be clamped on the bridge between the second and third strings. If you are in search of a new range of sound, you may place the mute between other strings. It's also possible to place it closer to the instrument, or further from the instrument (while remaining on the bridge) to discover different levels of muting. Turn it 45º to find the half-muted effect.
Does it mitigate wolf tones?
Yes. Specially on cello, you will need to experiment to find the right spot on the fourth string to clip the mute . Proper placement will considerably eliminate wolf tones. Hanging it next to the tailpiece will not affect the natural sound of your instrument.
Are they suitable for professional use?
Yes, WMutes were created specifically for professional musicians.
Can I use them for orchestra playing?
Yes, WMutes are used in many of the world’s best orchestras.
Can I return the mute if I don't like it?
Yes. Please refer to the order confirmation email you receive from Johnson String Instrument for instructions on returning your WMute. But we think you’ll be very pleased with this product.
Am I able to place a wholesale order if I am a qualified dealer?
