Guitars hanging at Asta 2013

The American String Teachers Association Convention was a smash hit! JSI was one of the many stringed instrument vendors exhibiting at this year s ASTA convention held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence from February 28 March 2.

JSI's main booth spanned thirty feet and featured The Bass Shop, our Rental Department, and our Sales Department. Another booth announced the grand opening of JSI's new Guitar Shop. We displayed a selection of our handmade guitars, mandolins, and banjos on a handsome Vermont wood guitar stand made by our guitar luthier Chuck Sanzone especially for this event. The Guitar Shop booth was very popular with visitors and we enjoyed the enthusiastic response to the new fretted instruments now being offered at JSI!

We were excited to spot a few celebrities on opening night of the conference: Mark O'Connor was seen strolling through the convention center checking out the vendor booths, and violist and Yamaha Artist Martha Mooke visited with fans at the elaborate Yamaha booth. Later in the evening, Ariane Todes, editor of The Strad magazine, took in the performance by Mark O'Connor's Quartet at the D'Addario Strings reception in the Omni Hotel, as did Berklee College's String Chair Matt Glaser. Across the hall, Connolly Strings hosted a delightful dessert social where some of the country's top string educators and other string experts talked shop.

JSI rented out basses and cellos to several music groups who traveled long distances to attend the convention, including Interlake High School (Bellevue, Washington), Garfield High School (Seattle, Washington), and the Iolani Middle School (Honolulu, Hawaii). We extend our congratulations to the National Orchestra Festival Competition first prize winners: Iolani Middle School for the Middle School String Orchestra Division, and Garfield High for the High School Full Orchestra Division.

JSI was proud to be a sponsor of two events: the Guitar Master Class led by guitar virtuoso Jonathan Leathwood described as a "tremendously valuable experience" by one guitar student; and the Massachusetts Music Educators Association dinner hosted by MMEA Auditions Coordinator Chris Memoli.

Guests who visited our booths received complimentary JSI tote bags containing gifts, including our brand new JSI Flexi-Heads stand lights, Peter Infeld tin-plated E strings, and our Bass Shop T-shirts and bumper stickers!

Our thanks to the well-organized ASTA staff who coordinated this incredible event. We had a wonderful time and hope all of our colleagues did as well!
