Sonata No. 1 in D Minor, Op.75 for violin and piano; Camille Saint-Saens
Published by International Edition. Edited by Zino Francescatti
Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) was the preeminent French composer of his day--perhaps even of the Romantic Era. He revered form and craft, finding inspiration in the music of the past--yet was known for his melodic gift, invention, and harmonic adventurousness. He made important contributions to several forms, particularly for string-players.
His Violin Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op.75 (1885) remains one of the greatest French violin sonatas of the Romantic Era, second only to Franck's. It is a neglected masterpiece, with invigorating challenges and rewards for the serious player, with plenty of charm to match. It was a favorite of such world-class violinists as Eugene Ysaye and Jacques Thibaud and even was a formidable source of inspiration for Marcel Proust. This hidden gem of the violin repertory is presented here in a fine International Edition, edited by Zino Francescatti. For advanced players. Includes piano and violin parts.
