12 Etudes for solo violin by Pierre Rode
Edited by Tyrone Greive. Published by International
Pierre Rode (1774-1830) was one of the principal representatives of the school of French violin playing in the early 19th century (along with Baillot and Kreutzer). He was strongly influenced by his teacher, Giovanni Battista Viotti, who himself extended the Italian violin tradition of Corelli and Tartini. The influence of Rode's playing and teaching extended to many violinists who would go on to study at the Paris Conservatory in the 19th century, thanks to his widely performed etudes and exercises.
Rode is primarily known for his 24 Caprices, which approach the difficulty of Kreutzer's famous 42 Studies. He also composed the far more advanced 12 Studies, which themselves are superb supplementary studies to Dont's 24 Etudes and Caprices, Op.35. Rode's 12 Studies help the player prepare for classical and early romantic repertory, as well as develop the precision and stylistic playing qualities of the professional violinist, all while being gratifying and satisfying to play. Advanced level, Grade 5.
