Sonata in G Major for violin and piano by Maurice Ravel

Revised and edited by Edmond Lemaitre. Notes by Alessandro Turba. Published by Durand.

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) was a significant French Basque composer and pianist of the early 20th century. Though often labeled an Impressionist, he often considered himself a classicist at heart, finding inspiration in the music of Couperin, Mozart, and Chopin. He also incorporated Spanish music of his heritage in his music, as well as jazz in his later compositions. He is best known for his imaginative sense for color, melody, and harmony.

the 1920s, jazz was brand new to France, and Ravel was an enthusiastic admirer of the style. His Violin Sonata (1927)-technically his second in the genre, after a shelved student work-was his first significant exploration of the style in his own music, exemplified by the iconic "Blues" movement at the work's center. The entire sonata is a sparkling, colorful addition to the violin repertory. This Durand edition incorporates revisions according to the most up-to-date musicological scholarship available and includes performing notes informed by historical performance practice. Master level, Grade 6.
