Concerto for violin, with piano; James Matheson (Theodore Presser)

James Matheson's Violin Concerto began life with the compound honor of being co-commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic, with two series of premieres in the 2011-12 season by Baird Dodge as soloist with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Chicago Symphony (and now available on Yarlung Records), followed by Martin Chalifour as soloist with Pablo Heras-Casado conducting the LA Philharmonic. Matheson cites inspiration from Bach's writing for violin, from the grand tradition of the concerto repertoire, and from the enticing modern ironies of M.C. Escher, all combined with Matheson's imagination for the sensibly unpredictable.
