Sonata in D minor, Op.5/12 'La Folia' for violin and piano by Arcangelo Corelli

Freely transcribed by Albert Spalding. Published by Masters Music

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was an influential Italian composer of the Baroque Era. Though he wrote few works, he helped shape European music-making for years to come. He helped establish the violin as a preeminent solo instrument and emphasized refinement of harmony, form, and melody as important qualities of the Baroque period.

His Op.5 sonatas are among the most celebrated of his works. They were originally intended to be performed by two string instruments, though today are often played with keyboard accompaniment. His Sonata No. 12 in D minor 'La Folia' is his most famous work, a single-movement chaconne renowned for its tastefully balanced variations and beautiful melodies. This is the celebrated, freely transcribed version by American violinist Albert Spalding. Intermediate-advanced level, Grade 4.
