Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op.44 for violin and piano by Max Bruch

Edited by Leopold Auer. Published by Carl Fischer

Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German romantic composer who wrote in the conservative tradition of Mendelssohn and Brahms. He had a strong sense of form and a special gift for lush, expressive melodic writing. Though he wrote over 200 works, he is almost exclusively known for three works: his Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, the ''Scottish Fantasy'' for violin and orchestra, and ''Kol Nidrei'' for cello and orchestra.

While Bruch's first violin concerto is among the most performed violin concertos in the repertory, his Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op.44 is relatively unknown-though it is one of his finest works. As with the first, it was written for Pablo de Sarasate. Though his characteristic lyricism is on full display, the concerto has more depth and complexity, as well as more challenges for the soloist. Master level, Grade 6.
