Eugene Ysaye (1858-1931) was one of the greatest violinists of the 20th-century. He studied under Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski and himself taught many great violinists and violists, including William Primrose, Nathan Milstein, and Joseph Gingold.

As a composer, his towering achievement was his set of six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op.27, the most significant entry in the genre since those by J.S. Bach. However, he wrote many smaller pieces as well, including this one. Ysaye's ''Reve d'enfant'' (Child's Dream) was written in 1894 for violin and piano and was dedicated to his son, Antoine. It is lyrical and richly melodic, steeped in the French late romantic tradition. This arrangement for viola and piano by Elaine Fine expands the violist's repertory and is ideal for intermediate-advanced players.
