12 Fantasies for solo viola, TWV 40: 26-37 by Georg Philipp Telemann
Urtext edition and arrangement by Kenneth Martinson. Published by Gems Music Publications.
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was a prominent German composer of the Baroque era. He was one of the most prolific composers in history, with over 3,000 works to his name. His music provides an important link between the Baroque and Classical periods and was a major influence to transitional composers such as C.P.E. Bach. Many of his works reflect his desire to create pedagogical, approachable works–a quality that makes them popular with amateur players today.
Telemann’s 12 Fantasies for Viola da Gamba, TWV 40: 26-37 (c.1733) represent his possible attempt to write challenging music for gamba players, as Bach had done with his cello suites. They were long thought lost, but were rediscovered in 2015. This adaptation for solo viola is the first published version of these works and will be valuable to players looking to expand their repertory past Bach’s cello suites. Advanced level, Grade 5.
