Sonata for viola and piano (Silverthorne) Niccolo Paganini
Published by Schott
Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840) was the most celebrated virtuoso of the violin of the nineteenth century, if not the entirety of classical music. His works represent a great leap forward for violin technique, showing with glittering pyrotechnics the wide range of capability of the instrument and the modern violinist. He kept his secrets closely guarded and engaged in friendly rivalries with other virtuosos of his time, like Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst.
Paganini was also interested in the viola as a solo instrument. He famously commissioned Hector Berlioz to compose a piece for him and his new Stradivarius viola, which became the symphony ''Harold in Italy''. Though eventually enraptured by the work, Paganini desired a true virtuosic showpiece for the viola and took it upon himself to write one--the Grand Sonata for Viola and Orchestra. It is a challenging work for the performer, such that it has only recently entered the standard repertory. Its charms and dazzling displays of virtuosity make it a worthy challenge for the advanced violist. This is the updated 2016 edition edited by Paul Silverthorne. Includes piano part and solo part. Master level, Grade 6.
