Ten Duets, Op.53, Vol.2 for two cellos by Reinhold Gliere
Published by International
Reinhold Gliere (1875-1956) was a Russian composer. A student of Taneyev and Hrimaly and a teacher of Prokofiev, he was inspired by the folk-oriented music of Rimsky-Korsakov and Ippolitov-Ivanov. Though he incorporated modern developments into his work, it was still thoroughly rooted in romanticism. As such, he was left relatively unscathed under the Soviet Regime (unlike many compatriots), which saw him as the last representative of the pre-revolutionary nationalist Russian composers. Though most remembered for his epic third symphony, he left a respectable and popular body of chamber music.
Gliere's Ten Duets for Two Cellos, Op.53 (1911) is one of the few cycles of its size written expressly for two cellos. They show his mastery of small forms, his rich melodicism, and the complex textures he could bring about from just two instruments. This second volume contains duets 6-10, printed in one performance score. Advanced level, Grade 5.
