Catalog ID: N-VN/5259

Born in an artistic family, his mother a pianist and his father a sculptor, Philippe Girardin began his musical studies on piano and violin at the age of six. He earned his baccalaureate degree in 1976, going on to study sociology, but his love of art and music led him to attend the International School of Violin Making in Cremona, where he received his diploma in 1981.

Philippe played violin professionally for over 25 years, and he founded and ran two violin making workshops in Milan and Neuchâtel alongside his trusted associates Anne-Dominique Cardinet, Sylvain Rusticoni and Alvaro Corrochano. For over 17 years, he has been performing fundamental research on the acoustics of instruments in the violin-family, and he has a passion for the varnishes of Italian instruments of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

His violins have been awarded top prizes, including a gold medal, first prize for acoustics, and Jury's Special Prize for acoustics and varnish for violin at the inaugural Pisogne International Violin Making Competition held in 2010. Additionally, he received a Silver Medal for violin and a certificate of merit for tone for viola at the Violin Society of America competition in 2008.

Philippe is a member of the Violin Society of America and the Schweizer Verband der Geigenbauer und Bogenmacher. His instruments are highly sought after and owned by top players and collectors around the world.
