He worked with the celebrated luthier Arthur Toman for many years before establishing his own studio in Newton in 1995. Polstein's instruments have won numerous awards in the Violin Society of America's International Competitions, including silver medals for tone in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2012.

Polstein is featured in Between the Notes, Making Art's Cello, a book by luthier James McKean about the collaboration of three luthiers who built a cello in honor of their colleague Arthur Toman.

Polstein is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers and has served as the Secretary of its Board of Governors. He currently serves as an advisor to the violin program at the North Bennet Street School.

This instrument is from Polstein's Atelier David Polstein, a line of instruments he began in 2013 to offer string players high-quality American-made instruments at a more affordable price.
