Julius Eastman (1940 - 1990) was an American composer, pianist, vocalist, and performance artist. He was among the first composers to combine minimalist processes with elements of pop music. He experimented with accruing and disintegrating textures in his "organic music" and composed for unconventional ensembles, like The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc for ten cellos. He was interested in the complex intersection of language, art, and identity (he was himself black and openly gay).
''Stay On It'' (1973) is one of his most quintessential and groundbreaking pieces. It is written with open instrumentation, for performance by any instrument combination (though voice, piano, and/or mallet instruments have played a role in many performances). It is avant-garde and minimalist, yet groovy and improvisatory.
