Double Concerto for clarinet (or violin), viola, and piano by Max Bruch

Published by Simrock

Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German romantic composer who wrote in the conservative tradition of Mendelssohn and Brahms. He had a strong sense of form and a special gift for lush, expressive melodic writing. Though he wrote over 200 works, he is almost exclusively known for three works: his Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, the ''Scottish Fantasy'' for violin and orchestra, and ''Kol Nidrei'' for cello and orchestra.

Bruch's Concerto for Clarinet, Viola, and Orchestra is a late work, dating from 1911. This was not the only piece he wrote for this rare combination of instruments; the previous year, he wrote his Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano. At this time, conservative romanticism was seen as old-fashioned, and this delightful piece never gained traction with audiences. In more recent years, it has garnered more attention from soloists. This Simrock edition includes a violin solo part that can be played in place of the clarinet. Advanced level, Grade 5.
