Suite for solo cello by Krzysztof Penderecki
Published by Schott
Krzysztof Penderecki (1933-2020) was an outstanding Polish composer of the late 20th century. He garnered fame from his striking avant-garde works focusing on sound masses, including his ''Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima'' (1961) for 52 string instruments. In his mature period, he would combine his avant-garde tendencies with a neo-romantic approach, with more of a focus on solo strings and choral music.
Penderecki's Suite for solo cello is one of these mature works and underwent several changes over the course of twenty years. Its first version was completed in 1994 as a gift to Mstislav Rostropovich and had just three movements: Serenade, Scherzo, and Notturno. By the time the final version was published in 2014, Penderecki had added five more movements. It is a quintessential late work, with plenty of avant-garde effects and chromatic melodicism.
