Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, solo cello part by Witold Lutoslawski

Published by Chester

Witold Lutoslawski (1913-94) was the most significant Polish composer since Chopin. His early works were inspired by folk music, but after World War II, he began developing a modern, individual style characterized by aleatory techniques. He garnered fame not only for his substantial works, but also for his artistic integrity in the face of a repressive Soviet regime.

His Cello Concerto (1970) was composed in the wake of his mother's death and a period of violent unrest in Poland, sharpening his and dedicatee Mstislav Rostropovich's opposition to the Soviet regime. These events give some context to the darkly dramatic, brooding, and deeply expressive qualities found in the concerto. It has since become one of his most celebrated compositions. Includes solo cello part only. Master level, Grade 6.
