Five Studies, Op.67 for solo cello by Dmitry Kabalevsky
Published by C.F. Peters.
Dmitry Kabalevsky (1904-87) was a Russian-Soviet composer and teacher. In contrast to the often turbulent or satirical work of his more famous compatriots Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich, Kabalevsky were more optimistic (and thus more readily accepted by the Soviet censors). He valued clarity of expression, simplicity of form, and folk-based melodies. He wrote pieces for professionals and beginning students alike, though he is perhaps best known for his trio of concertos for piano, violin, and cello. His Five Studies, Op.67 for unaccompanied cello are more musical character pieces than rote etudes and are gratifying short pieces for the advancing student. Grade 5.
