Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op.49 for cello and piano by Dmitry Kabalevsky
Published by International Music
Dmitry Kabalevsky (1904-87) was a Russian-Soviet composer and teacher. In contrast to the often turbulent or satirical work of his more famous compatriots Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich, Kabalevsky were more optimistic (and thus more readily accepted by the Soviet censors). He valued clarity of expression, simplicity of form, and folk-based melodies. He wrote pieces for professionals and beginning students alike, though he is perhaps best known for his trio of concertos for piano, violin, and cello. His Cello Concerto No. 1 has the hallmarks of his traditional, popular style, with folk-melodies that culminate in the third movement with its most tour-de-force solo writing. This International Edition is perfect for advanced students. Grade 5.
