In the 1970s, Russian composers Sofia Gubaidulina (b 1931) and Viktor Suslin (1942-2012) experimented with avant-garde and folk music, partly with the Astraea Ensemble they founded together. Both were among the seven "rebel" composers blacklisted by Tikhon Khrennikov in 1979 for not following standards set by the Soviet Communist Party. They soon left the Soviet Union to pursue opportunities for greater artistic freedom and both have since been recognized internationally as innovative composers, particularly Gubaidulina. This album pairs works for solo cello by both Gubaidulina and Suslin, giving cello players an opportunity to experience the fascinating music of the Soviet avant-garde. Advanced level, Grade 5.
