Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) was an Italian cellist and composer. He spent much of his career in employ of Spanish patrons; as such, his music retains the galante style popular in courtly settings and sometimes contains suggestions of his Spanish locale. He is known for his many chamber works, which brought the cello to greater prominence within the ensemble.
Boccherini's best-known work is likely his Cello Concerto No. 9 in B-flat Major, G.482; however, it has long been known and celebrated in a extensively recomposed 1895 version by Friedrich Grutzmacher. Grutzmacher merged it with several other concertos by Boccherini and took other significant liberties to make it more Romantic in character. Today, cellists can choose between Boccherini's original version or Grutzmacher's widely performed arrangement.
