Giovanni Cavani (1851–1936) was an Italian luthier who hailed from Spilamberto in the province of Modena. His father Domenico was a carpenter and bellfounder—in fact, Giovanni Cavani may have also been a bellfounder himself, though his primary focus was on violin making. Giovanni Cavani apprenticed with Leandro Bisiach, a venerated and influential luthier who trained many Italian makers of the early 20th century, including Gaetano Sgarabotto and Giuseppe Ornati. He was also employed by the music conservatories in Parma and Bologna to make and maintain the instrument collections. Many of Giovanni Cavani’s instruments are modeled after those of Guarneri “del Gesù.” They often bear a bright varnish in shades from golden-yellow to red-orange and are branded internally and externally with the maker’s initials. Instruments made by Cavani are highly sought after by professional musicians.
