Prelude and Scherzo (Two Pieces) for Double Bass and Piano, Op.32 by Reinhold Gliere

Revised and edited by Konrad Seibach and W. Chomenko. Published by Masters Music

Reinhold Gliere (1875-1956) was a Ukrainian-Russian composer. A student of Taneyev and Hrimaly and a teacher of Prokofiev, he was inspired by the folk-oriented music of Rimsky-Korsakov and Ippolitov-Ivanov. Though he incorporated modern developments into his work, it was still thoroughly rooted in romanticism. As such, he was left relatively unscathed under the Soviet Regime (unlike many compatriots), which saw him as the last representative of the pre-revolutionary nationalist Russian composers. Though most remembered for his epic third symphony, he left a respectable and popular body of chamber music.

Gliere made important contributions to the bass repertory, thanks to his close friendship with eminent bassist and conductor Serge Koussevitsky. The Prelude and Scherzo for bass and piano (published as Two Pieces, Op.32) combines beauty and virtuosity with smooth, cantabile lines and agile shifting to provide an exciting challenge for the enterprising bassist. Presented in solo tuning (F#-B-E-A). Master level, Grade 6.
