George Dykes violin, Leeds 1899

British violin maker George Langton Dykes was born in Leeds in 1884. He began making violins at a young age guided by his father, the well-known collector and violin expert Harold Dykes, who established the Dykes and Sons shop in Leeds and London. Through his father's renowned shop, George was exposed to many of the world's finest instruments and studied with prominent contemporary makers who were employed there, including French luthier Paul Bailly.
