Carriage House Violins Recreates a One-of-a-Kind Model

The culmination of an exciting new partnership with Boston Symphony Orchestra cellist Mihail Jojatu, our new in-house line of Carcassi Model cellos is Carriage House Violins' first collaboration on such a large scale. This new, innovative line of cellos affords our clients the perfect opportunity to own a faithful copy of a one-of-a-kind instrument: a stunning old Italian cello, made by Lorenzo and Tomasso Carcassi in Florence in the late 18th century.

Believed to be students of Giovanni Baptista Gabrielli, the Carcassi brothers operated out of Florence, Italy during the second half of the 18th century. This example of their work came to the United States from Europe in 1929 and was owned by cellists in San Francisco, CA and Rochester, NY before it was acquired by Mihail just over ten years ago.

While Florentine cellos are not as widely copied as their Cremonese and Venetian counterparts, it was love at first sight for Mihail when he tried this Carcassi cello, and it had been a dream of his for years to have the instrument copied. Our sales director Robert Mayes, vice president Matthew Fritz, and workshop manager John Dailey agreed that this cello was a wonderful template for a new line of instruments. They are currently made in Germany by renowned luthier Bernd Dimbath using the highest quality tonewoods and based on the model and specifications developed by the team at Carriage House.
