Stéphane Thomachot began his career in bowmaking in 1975 as a student of Bernard Ouchard in Mirecourt. Upon Thomachot's graduation, Étienne Vatelot named him one of the most promising young archetiers on the contemporary scene. In 1981, he opened a studio of his own in Paris, quickly becoming a prominent bowmaker both in France and abroad. He won two Gold Medals-one for a viola bow and one for a violin bow-in competitions held by the Violin Society of America in 1982 and 1984. In 1989, he won the coveted title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France , which is awarded to the best craftsmen in their respective fields throughout the country. In 1994, he was named Maître d'art by the French Ministry of Culture and the Institut National des Métiers d'Art. Thomachot is one of the most renowned voices in the contemporary bowmaking world, and he continues to promote the art of French bowmaking through training and educating the next generation of bowmakers. His workshop is located in Cucuron, a village in Provence, France.
