George Gemunder violin, Astoria, 1889 George Gemunder (1816-1899) is the most celebrated maker in JSI's American Collection. He worked for J. B. Vuillaume in Paris before coming to the U.S. in 1848. His violins entered into the World Fairs won numerous medals, and were often mistaken for old Cremonese violins. His violins were praised and played by renowned violinists of his day, including Ole Bull and Maud Powell. This Guarneri model is a great example of Gemunder's copying expertise. The violin has an antiqued red-brown varnish and is in excellent condition. The responsive, rich and projecting tone makes it a very satisfying instrument to play. 358mm
