Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was an influential Italian composer of the Baroque Era. Though he wrote few works, he helped shape European music-making for years to come. He helped establish the violin as a preeminent solo instrument and emphasized refinement of harmony, form, and melody as important qualities of the Baroque period.

His Op.5 sonatas are among the most celebrated of his works. They were originally intended to be performed by two string instruments, though today are often played with keyboard accompaniment. Like the other sonatas in the collection, Sonata No. 8 in D minor is cast in two movements and contains beautiful, flowing melodies. Intermediate level, Grade 3.
